Devil's Tower, WY - Tuesday July 9

The plan:
  • This is our 'play day' of climbing, to practice & get used to the climate. Also will help our guides determine what the best routes will be for us to climb on the tower tomorrow
  • Hang out & relax at the cabin at Devil's Tower Lodge
  • Shave our heads?
What really happened...
  • What an incredible day!!! Gorgeous weather (high 80's but breezy & shade where we were climbing, and beautiful blue sky), great guides (Mike & Jonathon), and awesome climbing!
  • Mike & Jonathon led the climb and then set top-ropes for the rest of us on Broken Tree (5.7), New Wave (5.7), and Everlasting Column (5.8+). That was great practice for the climbing we'll be doing tomorrow on Soler (5.9-) and El Cracko Diablo (5.8).
  • CC and Tom got to practice some multi-pitch climbing with Jonathon on Patent Pending (5.5).
  • Lars (Donn's son), age 12, even joined us for a few climbs (and put us to shame by making it look so easy!).
  • After climbing, we drove to Hulett, WY, to get some groceries. Looking forward to those steaks tomorrow! But tonight it's spaghetti...cooked by our climbing-guide-turned gourmet-chef, Mike! Jonathon and Mike both joined us for dinner.
  • The Larson family also had quite a few other relatives meet us at Devil's Tower today, so we had a huge group at the cabin this evening!

Devil's Tower, WY - Wednesday July 10

The plan:
  • This is the day we've all been waiting for since we first talked about this trip last January. We'll hopefully be climbing to the top of Devil's Tower. Maybe twice!
What really happened...
  • The summit! After waking up at 3am, and getting back down from the summit at 2pm, we all (except chris, who was ready for more!) thought that one summit was enough.
  • Everyone in the group made the summit - what a team! No injuries other than sunburn, bruises, scrapes, and sore feet.
  • Click here to see our climbing pictures from today.
